NC State University School of Architecture Fall 2011 Studio

Professors in practice Dennis Stallings and Jeffrey Lee have completed a joint semester long teaching assignment at the School of Architecture, North Carolina State University. The focus of the teaching effort was to investigate avenues in which issues of professional practice could be integrated into the design studio.

Students were frequently challenged to respond to class assignments as if they were working in a professional office. For example, the Professional Practice class assigned students to respond to a Request for Proposals for a real University project (Gregg Museum at NC State University). Following their response to the RFP, they formed teams and were “interviewed” for the project. This same project was assigned as their semester long design studio effort.

The intent of this coordinated teaching effort was that students begin to understand and appreciate the interrelationship between issues of practice and design.

This studio was partially funded by a grant from NCARB. Both Stallings and Lee are design principals at Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee.
