2010 Southeast Brick Design Award, Merit Award
SAS Hall
NC State University – Raleigh, NC

Completed in 2009, the Lauren Kennedy & Alan Campbell Theatre provides a home for the theater program at Barton College, a small liberal arts school in eastern North Carolina. A series of bypassing brick walls and terraces extend into the courtyard, anchoring the building to the site. Brick used for the project blends in color and texture with the architectural heritage of the campus. The glass enclosed lobby offers a generous, light-filled counterpoint to the black box. The black box itself is a simple flexible performance and teaching venue allowing great variability in stage and seating configurations.

The five-story SAS Hall at NC State University houses both the Mathematics and Statistics Departments of the College of Physical and Mathematical Science. The aluminum and glass curtain wall were designed to be responsive to solar orientation by variations of horizontal and vertical shading mullions. The brick veneer complements adjacent campus buildings. The first and second floors of SAS Hall are dedicated to instructional spaces. A number of options are provided including seminar rooms, a variety of flexible classrooms, and a 250-seat lecture hall. Upper floors accommodate faculty offices, graduate student work spaces, conference rooms, faculty lounges, and a shared library. The heart of the building is the atrium space that links the two legs of the “L” plan and contains the lobby, the lounges, the library, and specialized meeting spaces. PBC+L was design consultant to Millennium 3 Design Group.

Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee will donate the $2,000 President’s Award to the NC School of Architecture at NC State University for student benefit.
