July 7, 2009 (Apex, NC) — Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee and the Wake County Public School System celebrated the opening of Laurel Hills Elementary School in Apex, North Carolina. Formerly the home of Bespak manufacturing plant, PBC+L was chosen to renovate the existing industrial building into the 111,356 square-foot facilty which will now serve 700 students.

Jerry Bradley, Wake County Public School System’s director of  facilities, design and construction, said the project presented some challenges. Fitting a classroom building into an industrial building required redesign of all building systems to meet code requirements for an educational use. In addition, a steel structure was added to support a second floor inserted inside the building. A bridge across the high bay PE/dining area connects the two story classroom sections. Now, students can look out over the gym, auditorium, cafeteria and outdoors as they walk to class. Bradley was pleased with the results. “PBC+L did an excellent job,” he said.
